West Coast of Scotland Tour
Areas Covered;
Dumbarton castle, Loch Lomond, Loch Long, Inverarary Town & Castle, Loch
Awe, Kilchurn Castle, Oban.
This is one of our delightful
Scottish Tours that starts off from Edinburgh or Glasgow and will
take you through the West Coast of Scotland heading for the Gateway to the Isles.
We start our tour, depending on your location,
with a drive
over the Erskine Bridge
on the A82 to
Dumbarton
Castle. This battery castle which is located 4 miles south of Loch Lomond
is a fascinating castle which sits powerfully on a volcanic Rock and
dates back to the 5th Century as it has always been the main defence from invading
ships attacking through the River Clyde. This is a great visit
but quite strenuous as there are many steep steps to negotiate if you
want to make it to
the top.
Next we make our way northwards where our drive
will take us to the start of Loch Lomond where we can pop into the South
side of the Loch and view Loch Lomond northwards while admiring the picturesque
Cameron House Hotel.
From
there we travel half way up to the village of Tarbet where we leave the
A82 and
Loch Lomond for a trip along the A83 through Arrochar at loch
long where we eventually come to the Rest and be Thankful. We will
then
take a few minutes break to look at the amazing view.
Our picturesque drive will then take us slowly over
some amazing scenery all the way to Loch Fyne where we will pass
the famous Loch Fyne Oyster Bar. Passing The Oyster Bar we will
then come along the impressive Inverarary castle where the Duke of
Argyll and his family still reside. After the castle
we can stop in the
Inverarary Town and visit the Inverarary Jail and
courtroom.
Leaving Inverarary we will then head up a small back
road which will connect us with Loch Awe and from here we can view the
battle ruined Kilchurn castle, (The only safe way to reach this castle
is by small boat).
From
Loch Awe we head along the A85 popping in too see the
Bonawe Iron
Furnace at loch Etive then after carrying back onto the A85 passing the
Connel bridge we will come up against
Dunstaffnage Castle and from here
10 minutes later we will be entering Oban Town where we can visit
Oban
Distillery and
McCaig's Tower.
We can then head back and passing Tyndrum and then
Crainlarich which is just North of Loch Lomond Travelling down the A83
down Loch Lomond we can visit the
Drovers Inn Hotel which recently
celebrated its 300 year old birthday in August 2005 and we can maybe pop
in and sample some of its history.
The tour described above can be varied in many ways to accommodate your
own time schedule
